Mahjong Tile Matching Rules
Mahjong solitaire looks simple, but the open-tile rule is what makes the puzzle interesting.
What counts as an open tile?
A tile must be uncovered and have its left or right side free. If a tile is covered or squeezed between neighbors, it is blocked.
Visible does not always mean playable. A tile can be on screen but still locked by surrounding tiles.
Which tiles match?
Most tiles match only the exact same symbol: 4 Bamboo with 4 Bamboo, East with East, Red Dragon with Red Dragon.
Some solitaire rules let flowers match any flower and seasons match any season. The game interface should make these special sets clear.
Why pairs disappear later
A pair that is not legal now may become legal after you remove blocking tiles.
This is why clearing layers and side exits often matters more than matching every visible symbol immediately.
FAQ
Why can I see a tile but not click it?
It is probably covered or blocked on both long sides, so it is not open yet.
Do the two tiles need to be identical?
Usually yes, except special flower or season groups in some Mahjong solitaire rules.
