American Mahjong Rules for Beginners

American Mahjong is the style many players in the United States learn first. It uses racks, jokers, the Charleston and card-style winning hands, so it feels very different from Chinese Mahjong even though the tiles look familiar.

What makes American Mahjong different?

The main difference is the winning hand. In many Chinese rulesets you build four sets and a pair. In American Mahjong you try to match a specific hand from a card. The official yearly cards are published by organizations such as the National Mah Jongg League and American Mah-Jongg Association, and the hands change over time.

For copyright and maintenance reasons, this site does not reproduce official yearly cards. The online trainer uses original practice patterns that teach the same flow: choose a target hand, improve your tiles through the Charleston, draw and discard, then declare Mahjong when your 14 tiles match.

  • 152 tiles in a typical American set: suited tiles, winds, dragons, flowers and 8 jokers.
  • A hand is normally 14 tiles when declaring Mahjong.
  • Jokers can help complete groups of three or more, but they cannot complete a pair.

The Charleston

The Charleston is the signature opening pass in American Mahjong. Players choose unwanted tiles and pass them around the table before normal drawing and discarding begins.

The standard first Charleston goes right, across and left. Many real tables also allow a second Charleston in reverse order and a courtesy pass. The trainer starts with the core three-pass sequence so beginners can learn the rhythm quickly.

Drawing and discarding

After the Charleston, play moves into the familiar draw-and-discard rhythm. On your turn, you draw one tile from the wall. If the tile helps your selected hand, keep it and discard something else. If it does not help, you can discard it.

A useful beginner habit is to keep checking your target card after every draw. American Mahjong is less about making any flexible hand and more about choosing a lane, then improving toward that lane.

Declaring Mahjong

You declare Mahjong when your complete 14-tile hand matches the selected card hand. In real American Mahjong, scoring and table payments depend on the card and table rules. In this trainer, the goal is simpler: match the practice card and learn the flow without pressure.

If you press Mahjong too early, the trainer will tell you that your hand does not match yet. Use that feedback to compare your hand with the target pattern.
